Castleton University freshman Brandon Ryan was named one of the inaugural winners of the “Choose Vermont” Scholarship by Governor Phil Scott on Wednesday. Ryan will attend Castleton University this fall to study political science.
“I chose Vermont because I wanted to be near my family, and ultimately the affordability of Vermont higher education,” Ryan said. “College is very expensive and I’m glad that Vermont is trying to make upcoming college students’ lives easier.”
The Choose Vermont Scholarship program is a collaboration between the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development, the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, the Association of Vermont Independent Colleges, and the Vermont Higher Education Council. Scott announced in April that he would be awarding two $5,000 scholarships to students who committed to attending a Vermont college or university by June 1.
Ryan, who hails from Randolph, Vermont was one of 1,400 students who entered the contest.
The second scholarship was awarded to Kelsey True of Old Saybrook, Connecticut. True will attend The University of Vermont to study nursing.
